VA focuses on more than just physical health for its Veterans.
As more and more of our Nation’s Veterans come home, it’s clear that Veterans’ mental health is just as important as their physical health. VHA is dedicated to maintaining world-class care, which includes addressing both physical and mental wounds – we believe in treating the whole.
To achieve this standard of treatment, we hire mental health professionals such as psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed counselors. Read on to learn how you can help those Veterans who suffer from PTSD and other mental ailments that can severely affect their day-to-day lives.
Our psychiatrists are responsible for helping our Veterans and family members suffering from issues such as anxiety disorder, PTSD, depression, as well as other serious mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. As a psychiatrist at VHA, you can use a variety of proven methods – psychological hypnosis, environmental interventions, medication – to treat patients, as well as have access to the most advanced technology available.
A vital part of healing is the relationship between patient and doctor. This is especially true for VHA psychologists. VHA psychologists provide our Nation’s Veterans and their families with a caring, attentive and welcoming environment where healing relationships are built. Though our network is large, we focus on serving the tight-knit Veteran community. This allows you to spend more one-on-one time with your clients.
Our network of counselors is available to help Veterans with specific issues, including marriage counseling, readjustment counseling, homelessness and more. A counselor can also lead group counseling for Veterans suffering from PTSD or substance abuse, lending a helping hand to multiple Veterans at once. Counselors are able to build relationships with Veterans one-on-one or in a group setting.
Mental health positions at VA are unique, not only because you are able to work directly with our Nation’s Veterans or because you have access to advanced technologies and research. We are unique because we offer the relationships and community of a private practice with the funding and support of a large hospital network. When you work at VHA, you work to make the lives of Veterans better, one relationship at a time. If you’re ready to become a part of our community, visit VA Careers to view our open positions.
