The number of women Veterans using VHA health care has more than doubled since 2000 to more than 500,000, and VA has been working diligently to better meet our needs.
Although the damage from a brain injury is permanent, the deficits and dysfunction can be overcome, to a large extent, with rehabilitation and time. That said, it’s important to note that TBI is often not a one-time event. Certain lifestyle habits, such as playing contact sports, can lead to repeated concussions.
The Volunteer Caregiver Support Program at the VA SORCC (Southern Oregon Rehabilitation Center and Clinics) matches older Veterans with volunteers who live within their community. The volunteers provide home visits and respite for their family caregivers. This program is highly impactful for Veterans as well as for volunteers.

Vietnam Veteran Peter Brusyo Jr. passed away on Aug. 9 last year, just three days after his 72nd birthday – leaving behind his wife, son, daughter, and eight grandchildren. He also left behind his story of service in Vietnam to honor two fellow soldiers killed in action.
