Salvatore Palermo and the USS Dennis fought in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, where U.S. and Australian Naval forces hoped to cut off the Japanese fleet.

Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Army Veteran James Edwin Hoskins. Born in 1894 to a Quaker family, James spent his life as farmer in Fairfield, Iowa.

In June 1944, Lt. Gen. Carl Spaatz presented James Howard with the Medal of Honor, the United States' highest military decoration.

Purple Hearts Reunited has returned medals to their recipients’ families or to homes of honor from Nov. 1 through Nov. 3 across the state of Pennsylvania.
